In this project, a calendar was designed in collaboration with a professional photographer, Eudald Garcia Planas, who aimed to showcase and promote his work, as well as generate income through its sale. The calendar features a unique image for each month, with animals and landscapes he captured during his travels. Our primary goal was to create a simple, minimalist design that would highlight the photographs while offering visual appeal.
In the initial phase, we worked with a wide range of references to determine the most suitable format and the design foundations for the project. The end result was a staple calendar that would be available in two sizes: a larger one in DIN A3 format (when open) and a smaller version in DIN A4. A distinctive feature of this design is the use of illustrations integrated into the calendar's numbers instead of words, making it more interesting and captivating. Moreover, each page incorporates the most dominant color from each photograph to denote the month, weekends and public holidays, giving the design both unity and distinction.
One of the most significant challenges we encountered was during the printing phase. We were looking for a place that could provide high-quality printing and efficient service while keeping costs low to ensure profitability for the photographer after covering printing and design expenses. Initially, due to the short print run, we decided to try out a few local copy shops, but unfortunately, the results didn't meet our expectations. This led us to learn from our mistakes, and ultimately, we settled on a small printing press in Guissona, which, although it offered a slim profit margin, it proved to be the right choice.
This experience taught us the importance of prioritizing quality, and that sometimes it's worth investing a bit more to ensure excellent results. The twenty calendars produced sold rapidly, and buyers expressed their satisfaction. This project has been a significant success in terms of achieving our initial goals, promoting the photographer's work and gaining valuable insights for both parties.
